JJ Starling Highlight Reel

Created a short-form highlight reel around JJ Starling’s breakout game against his former team, Notre Dame, for Syracuse Basketball social channels. Shot the game as part of a four-person crew, then edited the reel in Premiere Pro and After Effects using footage from multiple cameras to capture both the emotion and pace of the day. Built the piece around a fast, attention-grabbing hook before settling into a more rhythmic flow that highlighted his shotmaking and playmaking, with added sound effects and commentary to pull viewers into the Dome atmosphere. Finished the edit by matching color across four different camera systems so the final reel felt cohesive, polished, and ready to move quickly online.

Task

While filming a Syracuse Basketball game, it became clear that a star player, JJ Starling, was having a breakout game against his former team, Notre Dame. In coordination with the lead video producer, I was tasked with editing a short-form highlight reel for the team's social channels.

Means

My personal setup for filming the game was a Sony A7SIII paired with a 24-70 and 70-200. Other camera bodies used across the three other shooters during this game included a FX3, FX9, and A7IV. To edit the highlight reel, I used Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Strategy

The focus was on promptly drawing the viewer into the video while delivering on a complilation of highlights for fans to enjoy. My goal was to do this using stylistic effects to enhance the story without distracting from the game's biggest moments.

Execution

I moved quickly from sorting raw team footage to building a narrative that matched the dome’s energy. By utilizing After Effects and Premiere Pro, I created a high-energy hook to capture the viewer's attention, then transitioned into a more rhythmic flow that showcased his playmaking ability. I added in layers of SFX and commentary to truly draw the viewer into the environment. I matched the color across 4 different cameras to ensure a consistent look throughout the footage. The reel was well recieved by my team and fans.
